Cuono Engineering is honored to be working with Midtown Preservation on the rehabilitation of the parking garage located in the historic Confucius Towers in Chinatown. Confucius Plaza, a 44-story curved, brown brick building completed in 1975, is a significant landmark in Chinatown with over 750 apartments, a public school, retail space, and an underground parking garage.
The construction of this complex was controversial, as it sparked a civil rights movement led by Asian Americans who were fighting discrimination in the construction industry. In 1974, protests erupted over discriminatory practices at the construction site, leading to the formation of the AAFE (Asian Americans for Equality) organization. After weeks of protests, the builder, DeMatteis Corp., agreed to hire 27 minority workers, marking a major victory for the community. This historic event paved the way for increased representation and opportunities for minority workers in the construction industry.
Cuono Engineering is responsible for designing the replacement concrete slabs on levels 1 and 2 of the garage, as well as creating drawings and specifications for permit approval and construction. Our team will also design temporary stability bracing to ensure safe demolition and reconstruction.
