Cuono Engineering is proud to provide structural design services for the Village of Ossining's new Bike Shed Facility, part of the ongoing Multi-Modal Transportation Hub (MMTH or The Hub) project. The Hub consists of a 4-story parking structure with more than 200 parking spaces, and the free standing accessory Bike Shed Facility which will provide e-bike charging stations and rentals.
Designed by Calderon Architecture & Design, the Bike Shed Facility features eye-catching, 32-inch deep, curved glulam members that cascade into concrete piers. Underneath the roof, the shed will include an open space with e-bikes available for rent, charging stations, bike racks, and storage lockers. It will also have an enclosure with a repair shop, restroom and storage.
The roof consists of overlapping corrugated metal roof panels, with fixed skylights supported by 2x10 Douglas Fir rafters and tapered glulam roof beams connected by custom steel hangers on both sides of the glulam arches. The glulam arched ends are fitted with galvanized gusset plates, providing both structural integrity and an aesthetically pleasing connection to the concrete piers. Steel moment frames were added to the repair shop to laterally stabilize the arched beam structure.
With its close proximity to the Old Croton Aqueduct and the downtown business district, this project is part of a larger effort to make downtown Ossining more walkable and is intended to encourage more sustainable transportation and less reliance on gas-powered vehicles. We look forward to the beginning of construction for this project!
