At Cuono Engineering, we are committed to providing students with a valuable and enriching internship experience in the field of structural engineering. Our Internship Program is designed to help students bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world application, allowing them to gain valuable insight, skills and knowledge that will prepare them for a successful career in the industry. Through a hands-on learning experiences, interns have the opportunity to participate in site visits, work with various software programs, gain a higher level of understanding of structural design and construction administration, and hone their soft skills.
In honor of National Intern Day, we would like to shine a spotlight on two of our current interns who have been excelling in our program. Remaz Alasad and Jean Gabriel Decimus, both aspiring structural engineers, have been actively involved in various projects under the guidance of our senior engineers.
As a graduate student at NYU pursuing a master's degree in structural engineering, Remaz has always had a passion for designing steel and foundations. This passion has only grown stronger during her internship with Cuono Engineering, where she has had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects and expand her knowledge and skills in the field.
One project that particularly stands out for Remaz is an estate in Cold Spring, New York which includes renovations to the existing guest house and main house, as well as the addition of a new 2-story garage at the main house. From wind analysis to analyzing wood joists and drafting, Remaz has been able to see the progress of the project and contribute to its success. Her involvement during the design phase has been valuable, allowing her to understand the intricacies of design and client coordination.
A key highlight of Remaz's internship has been the exposure to the concepts of wood design and its associated software. These tools have allowed her to streamline her design process and improve the efficiency of her work. Wood design is a new area of focus for Remaz, and this experience has broadened her understanding of different materials and their applications in structural engineering.
Jean, a junior civil engineering student at City College of New York, has had a transformative experience during his internship at Cuono Engineering. With a passion for structures and a natural aptitude for math and physics, Jean knew that structural engineering was his calling. His internship at Cuono Engineering has helped solidify his passion and provided him with valuable insights into the world of structural engineering.
During his time at Cuono Engineering, Jean has not only honed his technical skills but also gained a deeper understanding of the industry. From learning about wood and steel design to working with various structural design software, Jean has expanded his knowledge beyond the realms of his undergraduate coursework.
One of his most memorable projects was the structural design of a new one-story addition to an existing residence in Westchester County in which he assisted in the AutoCAD drawing and design calculations. It was here that Jean got his first taste of wood design, designing beams and joists using both hand calculations and software. Seeing his initials stamped on this project, marking his official contributions, was a moment of pride and validation for Jean.
