Earlier this week, replacement outriggers were installed to support new stone finishes to this Pre-War building located in the historic Flatiron District of NYC. Built in 1901, the 12-story building features stunning architectural details including cornices, carved stone and terra cotta details.
Cuono Engineering was contracted for the consultation of structural repairs to the existing terra cotta façade supports at multiple floors of north and east facades. After conducting observations earlier this year, we provided structural designs for repairs to the deteriorated steel outriggers, their connections and the spandrel beams at 11th floor of building.
Façade repairs in NYC are crucial for maintaining the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of the city's buildings. With a skyline filled with historic architecture and modern skyscrapers, preserving the facades of these structures is essential for the safety of pedestrians below and the overall character of the city.
The harsh weather conditions in NYC, including extreme temperatures, heavy rainfall, and high winds, can take a toll on building facades over time. Cracks, chips, and fading paint are common signs of wear and tear that may indicate the need for repairs. Older buildings may have underlying structural issues that require immediate attention to prevent further damage.
